Biographical Resources for New Mexicans: General Reference Works

The resources presented here will assist researchers in finding biographical or genealogical information about New Mexicans. Unless otherwise stated, all items are located in the Southwest Room at the New Mexico State Library.

General Reference Works

Bullis, Don.  New Mexico Historical Biographies. Rio Grande Books, 2011.  One of the Collection’s most recent biographical dictionaries.  Most biographies have a photo or illustration.   SW Ref  978.9 B9375ne

Chávez, Fray Angélico.  Origins of New Mexico Families: A Genealogy of the Spanish Colonial Period, rev. ed.  Museum of NM Press, 1992. Chavez used scholarly and primary sources to identify individuals in NM in the 17th through early 19th centuries.  In alphabetical order, with addenda. 929.1 C512o

Coan, Charles F.  A History of New Mexico, 3 vols.  American Historical Society, 1925.  Vols. 2 and 3 contain illustrated biographical sketches; index is in vol. 1. 978.9 C652h

Davis, Ellis Arthur.  The Historical Encyclopedia of New Mexico, 2 vols.  NM Historical Ass’n.,  1945. Biographical information on persons living in the earlier half of the 20th century.  Index printed in both volumes; includes portraits. 978.9 D261h

Haines, Helen.  The History of New Mexico, from… 1530-1890, with portraits and biographical sketches of its prominent people.  NM Historical Publishing Co., 1891.  This is one of our earliest biographical sources, containing sketches of people living in the latter half of the 19th century.  Index to biographies is located at end of Table of Contents. 978.9 H153h

Illustrated History of New Mexico… from the earliest period of its discovery to the present time, together with… biographical mention of many of its pioneers and prominent citizens of today.  Lewis Publishing Co., 1895.  Two-thirds of the volume consists of biographies, primarily from the 19th century, with some portraits.  Includes index. 978.9 I29

Read, Benjamin M.  Historia Ilustrada de Nuevo México.  Compañía Impresora del Nuevo Mexicano, 1911.  Apéndice 4 has portraits and illustrations of persons from the second half of the 19th century.  We also have an English translation of this work. 978.9 R282

Reeve, Frank D.  History of New Mexico, 3 vols. Lewis Publishing Co., 1961.  Volume 3 is “Family and Personal History”, covering people of the mid-20th century.  Portraits and index. 978.9 R331h

Representative New Mexicans.  C.S. Peterson, 1912.  Consists of portraits with brief biographies and facsimile signatures of over 400 men prominent at the time of NM statehood. 920 R425

Twitchell, Ralph Emerson.  The Leading Facts of New Mexican History, 5 vols.  Torch Press, 1911-17.  Vols. 1 & 2 are general history of NM; 3-4 are county histories with many biographies of prominent citizens. Vol 5 is trade and industrial histories.  Each vol. has separate index.  Biographical information included in every volume, with heavier emphasis on the 19th century. 978.9 T974L

Who’s Who in New Mexico.  Larkin, Roosevelt & Larkin, 1947.  Brief biographies of persons living during the World War II era.  Not in alphabetical order, but indexed. 920.0789 W6288

Who’s Who in the West.  Marquis, 1949- ongoing.   Broader in scope, and persons must be fairly well-known in order to be included.  In alphabetical order. 920.079 W628
