Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP) 2004-2012 was part of the Defense Intelligence Agency. AATIP did not issue any public reports but is considered the forerunner of the Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon Task Force. This task force is included in The Intelligence Authorization act for Fiscal Year 2021 (June 17, 2020) where is was charged to “standardize collection and reporting on unidentified aerial phenomenon, any links they have to adversarial foreign governments, and the threat they pose to U.S. military assets and installations.” This task force was established on August 4, 2020.

The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2024 (S. 2226) included the Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena Disclosure Act of 2023 or the UAP Disclosure Act of 2023. This act "requires the National Archives to establish a collection of records to be known as the Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena Records Collection."
"The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) provides access to many government records on Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) and Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAPs) through the National Archives Catalog and NARA's website. Additionally, since 2023 NARA has been digitizing historical records from its holdings, in support of the Department of Defense. Digitized records are being made available in the Catalog on a rolling basis as the work is completed."
