By the 1530s, Indigenous Pueblo populations in the American Southwest reached tens of thousands of people with a rich culture expressed through stunning architecture, ceramic technology, and ceremonial life. Then, into that world came outsiders--an army from Spain's new colony in Mexico led by Francisco Vázquez de Coronado. First contacts at the western Pueblos of Zuni, Hopi, and Acoma led to open warfare. By the winter of 1540, increasing tensions and resistance spilled over into violence in America's earliest named war, the Tiguex War, which occurred in an area settled by ancestors of today's Rio Grande Pueblos. The largest and most intact battle site of that fierce conflict is known as Piedras Marcadas Pueblo, situated within present-day Albuquerque, New Mexico. Fighting back against Coronado's crossbows and muskets with stone-tipped arrows and slingstones, the Puebloans mounted a courageous defense of their largest village, piling rocks on rooftops and hurling them down at attackers. Hundreds of artifacts found at Piedras Marcadas reveal the life-and-death contest for survival that occurred within those ancient walls and plazas.

Teach a conquistador's writings about his journeys in the Americas In 1527 Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca journeyed from Spain to Florida with the ill-fated Pánfilo de Narváez expedition and ended up wandering by land for years with a small band of survivors before reaching Spanish outposts in modern-day Mexico. He later traveled to South America as an appointed provincial governor, only to be sent back to Spain in chains some years after his arrival. Uncovering forgotten stories of the national monuments of the American Southwest This volume uncovers the little-known legacy of Frank Pinkley, the first superintendent of the Southwestern National Monuments (SWNM)--a unique National Park Service unit established in 1923. Pinkley's leadership and innovative approach helped protect and develop thirty diverse monuments, ranging from Montezuma Castle to White Sands, linked by miles of rough roads and united by their historical, archaeological, and natural significance. Drawing on archived SWNM Monthly Reports, Will Moore reconstructs the stories behind these monuments and their contributions to the nascent national park system. From the pioneering all-Navajo Mobile Unit of the Civilian Conservation Corps to visionary work in visitor education, Pinkley and his team helped to set a course for the protection of American landscapes.

Jack Delano's 1943 photographs capture New Mexico's vital role in wartime rail transport for AT&SF. Before the first atomic bomb was completed in 1945 at Los Alamos, New Mexico, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (AT&SF) was operating twenty-four hours a day hauling war materials and troops across the state on its transcontinental line from Los Angeles to Chicago. Maintenance workers for the tracks and locomotives were provided by the diverse population of New Mexico, including Native Americans, Hispanics, and African Americans. With locomotive repair shops and freight yards in Clovis, Albuquerque, and Gallup, the state was well positioned to service the railroad during World War II. Documenting all this activityfor the U.S. Office of War Information (OWI) was photographer Jack Delano, a native-born Ukrainian. In 1943, he traveled the AT&SF line west across the deserts and mountains of New Mexico, and his photographs chronicle the heroic efforts of New Mexico's populace to keep the railroad running across their state.

This volume gathers works produced by Spanish-speaking people of Mexican descent who became United States citizens by virtue of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (1848) and whose ancestors had resided in New Mexico, Arizona, California, Texas, and Colorado for hundreds of years prior to the Mexican-American War. Marketing the Wilderness analyzes the relationship between the outdoor recreation industry, public lands in the United States, and Indigenous sovereignty and representation in recreational spaces. Combining social media analysis, digital ethnography, and historical research, Joseph Whitson offers nuanced insights into more than a century of the outdoor recreation industry's marketing strategies, unraveling its complicity in settler colonialism.
