New in Southwest

Populism has become a global movement associated with nationalism and strong-man politicians, but its root causes remain elusive. Mud, Blood, and Ghosts exposes one deep root in the soil of the American Great Plains. Julie Carr traces her own family's history through archival documents to draw connections between U.S. agrarian populism, spiritualism, and eugenics, helping readers to understand populism's tendency toward racism and exclusion. Carr follows the story of her great-grandfather Omer Madison Kem, three-term Populist representative from Nebraska, avid spiritualist, and committed eugenicist, to explore persistent themes in U.S. history: property, personhood, exclusion, and belonging. While recent books have taken seriously the experiences of poor whites in rural America, they haven't traced the story to its origins. Carr connects Kem's journey with that of America's white establishment and its fury of nativism in the 1920s. Presenting crucial narratives of Indigenous resistance, interracial alliance and betrayal, radical feminism, lifelong hauntings, land policy, debt, shame, grief, and avarice from the Gilded Age through the Progressive Era, Carr asks whether we can embrace the Populists' profound hopes for a just economy while rejecting the barriers they set up around who was considered fully human, fully worthy of this dreamed society.

James C. Wilson's memoir begins in Pula, Yugoslavia, circa 1972, where he is accused of threatening Marshal Tito, the President of Yugoslavia. It flashes back to the States and his anti-war activities at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago and elsewhere. He then travels to Paris and Strasbourg where he spends time in exile with a French companion who speaks no English and dislikes Americans, and who finally leaves him for a group of pilgrims on their way to India. Returning to the States, he finds refuge in the counterculture community of Santa Fe, New Mexico, which becomes his spiritual home.

What will it take for us to heal as a society and face up to the challenge of climate change? Four foundational concepts came to mind: spirit, nature, heritage and community. Human Spirit because we're deeply wounded and we are wounding each other and the planet as a result; we need a combined sense of humbleness and can-do spirit to rise to the occasion. Mother Nature because there are vital restorative forces there that can guide us. Heritage Values because we should gain wisdom from those who have come before us. And Beloved Community because we must enact hopeful solutions in teamwork with others. If we all act bravely together in grassroots fashion, our cumulative actions ripple across civil society creating the prospect for a sea change which can renew the world. The author thought what better way to explore these four healing tenets than to walk four directions in their honor. By doing so he hoped to make these cornerstones more concrete while actualizing and assembling them into the wholeness we need to successfully combat the climate crisis. This book is dedicated to upholding the web of life all around us, to building a mass movement for a livable climate and to raising up the regenerative power of walking. Walking tributes abound and walking heroes are featured throughout. Two of the author's walking heroes are his own dogs, who get him started and help him complete the journey. In exploring his own and broader human frailty as well as redemption, Robb is insightful and self deprecating. His heartwarming endeavor for integrity shines light on sources of solution that are age-old, interpersonal and original.

Religion in Sixteenth-Century Mexico explores the development of religion as transferred from Spain to Tenochtitlan. The religious world of both Aztecs and Spanish Catholics at time of encounter was organized through large and small scale community, family, and personal devotions. Devotion expressed through cults was the single most salient aspect in the transfer of Catholicism to New World people. This book highlights the role that ideas such as afterlife, apocalypticism, iconoclasm, Marianism, resistance, and saints played in the emergence of Mexican Catholicism in the sixteenth century. The larger Atlantic world context, as seen in the regions of Iberia, Anahuac, and 'New Spain', or central Mexico from Zacatecas to Oaxaca, is explored in detail. Beginning with an extensive historical essay to contextualize the pre-contact period, the bulk of this volume contains 118 separate keywords each with three comparative essays examining Aztec and Catholic religious practices before and after contact.

Between 1879 and 1918, the Carlisle Indian Industrial School housed over 10,000 students and served as a prototype for boarding schools on and off reservations across the continent. Writing Their Bodies analyzes pedagogical philosophies and curricular materials through the perspective of written and visual student texts created during the school's first three-year term. Using archival and decolonizing methodologies, Sarah Klotz historicizes remedial literacy education and proposes new ways of reading Indigenous rhetorics to expand what we know about the Native American textual tradition.   This approach tracks the relationship between curriculum and resistance and enumerates an anti-assimilationist methodology for teachers and scholars of writing in contemporary classrooms. From the Carlisle archive emerges the concept of a rhetoric of relations, a set of Native American communicative practices that circulates in processes of intercultural interpretation and world-making. Klotz explores how embodied and material practices allowed Indigenous rhetors to maintain their cultural identities in the off-reservation boarding school system and critiques the settler fantasy of benevolence that propels assimilationist models of English education.   Writing Their Bodies moves beyond language and literacy education where educators standardize and limit their students' means of communication and describes the extraordinary expressive repositories that Indigenous rhetors draw upon to survive, persist, and build futures in colonial institutions of education.    

Arnold Krupat's From the Boarding Schools makes available previously unheard Apache voices from the Indian boarding schools. It includes selections from two unpublished autobiographies by Sam Kenoi and Dan Nicholas, produced in the 1930s with the anthropologist Morris Opler, as well as material by and about Vincent Natalish, a contemporary of Kenoi and Nicholas. Natalish was one of more than one hundred Apaches taken from Fort Marion to the Carlisle Indian School by its superintendent, Captain Richard Henry Pratt, in 1887. A considerable number of these students died at the school, and many who were sent home for illness or poor health did not recover. Natalish, however, remained at Carlisle and graduated in 1899. He married, had a son, and lived and worked in New York. He also actively sought the release of his relatives and other Apaches held prisoner at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Apache people have been telling and circulating stories among themselves for generations. But in contrast to their neighbors the Hopis and the Navajos, Apaches have produced relatively few written autobiographical narratives, and even fewer about their boarding school experiences. Supplementing the narratives with detailed cultural and historical commentary, From the Boarding Schools brings these lived experiences from the archives into current discourse.  

Carlos Montezuma is well known as an influential Indigenous figure of the turn of the twentieth century. While some believe he was largely interested only in enabling Indians to assimilate into mainstream white society, Montezuma's image as a staunch assimilationist changes dramatically when viewed through the lens of his Yavapai relatives at Fort McDowell in Arizona. Through his diligent research and transcription of the letters archived in the Carlos Montezuma Collection at Arizona State University Libraries, David Martínez offers a critical new perspective on Montezuma's biography and legacy. During an attempt to force the Fort McDowell Yavapai community off of their traditional homelands north of Phoenix, the Yavapai community members and leaders wrote to Montezuma pleading for help. It was these letters and personal correspondence from his Yavapai cousins George and Charles Dickens, as well as Mike Burns that sparked Montezuma's desperate but principled desire to liberate his Yavapai family and community--and all Indigenous people--from the clutches of an oppressive Indian Bureau. Centering historically neglected Indigenous voices as his primary source material, Martínez elevates Montezuma's correspondence and interactions with his family and their community and shows how it influenced his advocacy. Martínez argues that Montezuma's work in Arizona directly contributed to his national projects. For his Yavapai community, Montezuma set an example as a resistance fighter and advocate on behalf of his people and other Indigenous groups. Martínez offers a critical exploration of history, memory, the formation of archival collections, and the art of writing biography.

Strength from the Waters is an environmental and social history that frames economic development, environmental concerns, and Indigenous mobilization within the context of a timeless issue: access to water. Between 1927 and 1970 the Mayo people--an Indigenous group in northwestern Mexico--confronted changing access to the largest freshwater source in the region, the Fuerte River. In Strength from the Waters James V. Mestaz demonstrates how the Mayo people used newly available opportunities such as irrigation laws, land reform, and cooperatives to maintain their connection to their river system and protect their Indigenous identity. By using irrigation technologies to increase crop production and protect lands from outsiders trying to claim it as fallow, the Mayo of northern Sinaloa simultaneously preserved their identity by continuing to conduct traditional religious rituals that paid homage to the Fuerte River. This shift in approach to both new technologies and natural resources promoted their physical and cultural survival and ensured a reciprocal connection to the Fuerte River, which bound them together as Mayo. Mestaz examines this changing link between hydraulic technology and Mayo tradition to reconsider the importance of water in relation to the state's control of the river and the ways the natural landscape transformed relations between individuals and the state, altering the social, political, ecological, and ethnic dynamics within several Indigenous villages. Strength from the Waters significantly contributes to contemporary Mexicanist scholarship by using an environmental and ethnohistorical approach to water access, Indigenous identity, and natural resource management to interrogate Mexican modernity in the twentieth century.  

A restoration of the agency and influence of free African-descended women in colonial Mexico through their traces in archives   "A breathtaking study that places free African-descended women at the nexus of questions about religion, commerce, and the law in colonial Mexico. Free women in central Veracruz, sometimes just one generation removed from slavery, purchased land, ran businesses, managed intergenerational wealth, and owned slaves of African descent. Drawing from archives in Mexico, Spain, and Italy, Danielle Terrazas Williams explores the lives of African-descended women across the economic spectrum, evaluates their elite sensibilities, and challenges notions of race and class in the colonial period.

Pushing Boundaries in Southwestern Archaeology draws together the proceedings from the sixteenth biennial Southwest Symposium. In exploring the conference theme, contributors consider topics ranging from the resuscitation of archaeomagnetic dating to the issue of Athapaskan origins, from collections-based studies of social identity, foodways, and obsidian trade to the origins of a rock art tradition and the challenges of a deeply buried archaeological record.   The first of the volume's four sections examines the status, history, and prospects of Bears Ears National Monument, the broader regulatory and political boundaries that complicate the nature and integrity of the archaeological record, and the cultural contexts and legal stakes of archaeological inquiry. The second section focuses on chronological "big data" in the context of pre-Columbian history and the potential and limits of what can be empirically derived from chronometric analysis of the past. The chapters in the third section advocate for advancing collections-based research, focusing on the vast and often untapped research potential of archives, previously excavated museum collections, and legacy data. This book was prepared under the auspices of the Friend of Tijeras Pueblo (FOTP), which was recognized as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 1994. FOTP works in partnership with the US Forest Service to provide for the preservation and interpretation of the Tijeras Pueblo Archaeological Site. All proceeds from the sale of this book go directly to the Friends of Tijeras Pueblo. It is an overview intended for the general reader, as well as for those with a more informed background and interest in the subject. Many who are attracted to this title will be familiar with much of the technical terminology of Southwestern archaeology and geology. However, for the broader reader and an effort has been made to avoid technical jargon. Three authors contributed to the book: Paul R. Secord, a graduate of the University of New Mexico in archaeology and geology serves, and longtime member of the Friends of Tijeras Pueblo is the editor and author of the section on the Tijeras Pueblo Archaeological Site. Hayward H. Franklin, PhD is a noted specialist in Ancestral Pueblo pottery, and has contributed to a number of archaeological projects throughout the Southwest. He prepared the section on archaeologic and historic sites, other than the Tijeras Pueblo Site Complex. Frances Léon (Swasesh) Quintana, PhD. (1917- 2009) wrote the two papers that address the study areas Spanish Colonial history. Dr. Quintana was the Curator of Ethnology at the New Mexico State Laboratory of Anthropology (LOA) in Santa Fe. Under her direction the first Hispanics and Native Americans were hired to senior staff positions at the LOA. The Tijeras Pueblo Archaeological Site on the grounds of the USFS Sandia Ranger Station is by far the most visible and well-known archaeological resource in Tijeras Canyon, however, it is only a part of a much more expansive archaeological picture. Following an Introduction, the book begins with a discussion of Tijeras Pueblo as PART I, PART II is a survey of other archaeological resources in than Canyon. Part III looks into the Canyon's Spanish Colonial history. A concluding chapter summarized the topics in the book.

The Spanish word cimarron, meaning "wild" or "untamed," refers to a region in the southern Rocky Mountains where control of timber, gold, coal, and grazing lands long bred violent struggle. After the U.S. occupation following the 1846-1848 war with Mexico, this tract of nearly two million acres came to be known as the Maxwell Land Grant. WhenCimarron Meant Wild presents a new history of the collision that occurred over the region's resources between 1870 and 1900. Author David L. Caffey describes the epic late-nineteenth-century range war in an account deeply informed by his historical perspective on social, political, and cultural issues that beset the American West to this day. Cimarron country churned with the tensions of the Old West--land disputes, lawlessness, violence, and class war among miners, a foreign corporation, local elites, Texas cattlemen, and the haughty "Santa Fe Ring" of lawyerly speculators. These clashes played out over the following thirty years, involving the new English owners, miners and prospectors, livestock grazers and farmers, and Native Americans. The City of Albuquerque Poet Laureate from 2020-2022, Mary Oishi, brings together one hundred Albuquerque poets in this anthology that commemorates the Poets in the Libraries series. When COVID-19 struck, Oishi was tasked with promoting and programming poetry during the pandemic. As Albuquerque-and the world-shifted to virtual events, so did the Poets in the Libraries series. Community poets read work virtually at home and at the city's many public libraries. The international boundary between the United States and Mexico spans more than 1,900 miles. Along much of this international border, water is what separates one country from the other. Border Water provides a historical account of the development of governance related to transboundary and border water resources between the United States and Mexico in the last seventy years. This work examines the phases and pivot points in the development of U.S.-Mexico border water resources and reviews the theoretical approaches and explanation that impart a better understanding of these events. Author Stephen Paul Mumme, a leading expert in water policy and border studies, describes three important periods in the chronology of transboundary water management. First, Mumme examines the 1944 Water Treaty, the establishment of the International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC) in 1945, and early transborder politics between the two governments. Next, he describes the early 1970s and the rise of environmentalism. In this period, pollution and salinization of the Colorado River Delta come into focus. Mumme shows how new actors, now including environmentalists and municipalities, broadened and strengthened the treaty's applications in transboundary water management. The third period of transborder interaction described covers the opening and restricting of borders due to NAFTA and then 9/11. For almost fifty years, coal dominated the Navajo economy. But in 2019 one of the Navajo Nation's largest coal plants closed.
