The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is the nation's record keeper. NARA keeps approximately 3% of the government documents deemed important for legal or historical preservation. NARA microfilmed Federal records and made them available for researchers while preserving the originals from deterioration and damage from handling from 1941 until several years ago. Now the majority of preservation is digital with research copies available online or on CD.
The New Mexico State Library has important NARA collections on microfilm including Federal and Territorial census, Indian Census Rolls, Military records, and colonial era Spanish and Church archives. The materials are organized by record collection number. Let us know if you need help locating the information you need.
